A large group of TP runners travelled up to the Lake District this weekend for the iconic Coniston 14 road race. It was indeed fourteen miles around lake Coniston but don’t be fooled, it most certainly was not flat!
The weather was relatively kind with mild temperatures, low winds and only three rain showers just before and during the race. Twenty three brave TP runners completed the gruelling course and claimed their slate tile (in lieu of a medal). Several more club members came along as the support crew and most also took part in a very scenic lake walk kindly led by Madeleine the following morning. Some even took an open water recovery dip!
Paul Brennan was our first TP runner home in an incredible time of 1hr 22 mins (12th male overall, 2nd M45). Cyn Cano was our first woman to cross the finish line in a rapid 1hr 30 (4th female). Cara Huckstep finished 8th (1st V40) and Anja Greenwood was 9th (2nd V45). All were rewarded with a handshake from the local MP to receive a slate placemat and a significant amount of money to spend in a local sports shop!
Matt Bannon was next in an excellent 1 hr 48 and then Sue Cross following in just over 2 hours. Cyn, Cara, Anja and Sue also won the overall 2nd women’s team prize (more vouchers!).
Full results are available on the website and all who completed this race have achieved something substantial. Jas Verdi, a fairly new member, was our final runner and notably had chosen this brutal race as her first ever of half-Marathon distance so kudos to her!
We all had such a wonderful time and gained so much more from the experience than just the satisfaction of completing the event. Strongly recommended to anyone considering this as a future race.
